The Great Escape

When I walked out the door yesterday for my daily trek to the hospital, I almost left the car seat at home (on purpose) and I did send Justin to work. I thought our chances of bringing him home were about 50/50. We gambled and we lost! And... we won, of course :)

When I walked in the doors of the NICU, the dietician saw me and said "Congratulations! Big day, huh?" I responded with wide eyes "I don't know. IS it?" She laughed and said, "Well, I won't spoil anything for you." I ran down the hall and flipped open his chart since his nurse was busy with another baby. Right there in big letters "Baby to go home today." Rock ON!!

They are still quite concerned about his weaksauce weight gain, but that's not something that we need to be hospitalized for. We'll be meeting with our pediatrician on Friday for the first of many many many appointments and that will be our primary focus for a while, I suspect. I'm so pleased with how well he has done. So many of his caregivers have said "this little miracle guy has done so much better than we ever thought he would. He has far exceeded our expectations." I know he has done so well because of the faith and prayers of friends, family, and concerned strangers (new friends, I mean) around the world. From the bottom of our family's collective hearts, THANK YOU.

Justin's brother Danny drove Justin up to the hospital so that we could drive home together for this momentous occasion. I left my camera in the car, but my friend Audrey had hers with her and was generous enough to capture the entire adventure for us! Of amusement, she labeled the pix folder she emailed "get him outta here". So true!

Packed up and ready to go. He slept the entire way home, and for another hour and a half after we got there. We're bustin' out!
"Hello, wee little Crewton! You need to grow, do you hear me?"
Audrey and me.
It may not be his first road trip, but it's his first ride in our van.
We're gettin' out while the gettin' is good!
94 days and we are headed home at last!!

I am so happy for your family. I found your blog awhile back and I come here daily to see how baby Crew is doing. What a little miracle you have here! He will continue to be in my prayers as he begins his new journey at home with his family!

Congratulations on bringing Crew home ...

.. I've followed your story from afar here in NZ .. and cried many tears for both the ups and downs ..

.. you and your family have been through so much .. and this must be one of the best feelings ever

.. I know coming home after being in hospital with my 2 seemed so far away and then when it was mentioned that we were heading home I couldn't really believe it until we were on the plane home ..

So thrilled that you are able to bring your brave little fighter home ... and get in to a routine at home ...

The weight will come .. esp. with all the love and prayers that are coming your way from around the world ..

All the very best

You and your family are so sweet! I'm so glad you were able to come home - the little doll certainly shows how much growing he's still got to do, but he'll do it. And suddenly, you'll wonder where that teeny baby you were so worried about went.

Big hugs of congratulations!
