The Car Seat Test

Crew took the car seat test on Monday. It's where they have to sit in a car seat for as long as it would take them to get home from the hospital. They have to sit there and not cut off their own airway. Crew passed with flying colors. At 4 pounds, 10 ounces, he just barely barely fits.

Why did we do the car seat test, you may ask?? Because he is almost ready to come home! He lost weight last night, or he would have been cleared to come home... today! (If you think you're surprised, you have nothing on us!) There has been a flurry of preparation-type activity going on around here!

They decreased his fortification yesterday to 22 calories/ounce after he had a massive, suspicious poopy during the night shift on 24 calories/ounce. But they weighed him the night before last and then he pooped. Without that giant poopy, I'm convinced that he would have been up last night. I'm pretty sure they won't change his fortification and will just wait and see what he does tonight. They weren't going to make him gain weight two nights in a row because he's been doing so well with everything else, but now I don't know. Maybe if he gains tonight they'll still let him come home tomorrow, but maybe not until Thursday. Hopefully not longer than that. He just has to prove that he can grow!

PS -- if you see my kids, they don't know how close we are and we're keeping it a surprise, so don't say anything to them!

I've never seen a car seat look so big! He looks so cute, and I am happy that you get to take him home soon.

I just found this blog today, and have spent all morning reading through your posts.

YAY for passing the car seat test! :) So happy for you that he's almost on his way home!!

I'm also the parent of a preemie, Connor - born at 27 weeks - he's now 8 weeks old, still in the NICU. He also developed NEC, and we're currently waiting for his reattachment surgery - hopefully next Monday. He's also got some issues with IVH and ROP.

Thanks for writing with such heart and honesty - I've been so touched this morning by your strength.

Hang in there, Crew!
